Picking and Opening a Durian

Curious about Durian? Some people love ’em, some people hate ’em.  I say it’s kinda like getting to know someone – you really gotta give it three encounters before you really can draw any conclusions 🙂

I think they taste kind of like pudding…. yummmm.

So, how do you pick the perfect durian?  First, look for a fruit that is nice and soft and uniform in color.  One with some brown and and some green is less likely to be truly ripe and ready.  Also, if you can find one with one of the seams already split, it will be much much easier to get into.  Often you can just pry apart the fruit at the seam…. sometimes though you just have to give it a good toss and crack it open on the sidewalk 🙂

Peep this fun video I did with RawAcademyTV on YouTube

So if you haven’t tried durian and are wondering… “Where can I try some of this amazing fruit???”… How about the Fun at the Woodstock Fruit Festival?  I’d LOVE to have you join us at the 2014 festival!  I’ll be there again, and so will the durian!!  Sign up for WFF 2014 at https://thewoodstockfruitfestival.com/

  1. Eeeek! Don't eat the split open durians! When they prepare the fruits for shipment they give them a bath in chlorine water, the split open ones will get chlorine inside them! Yuck. Here's a link to when we visited a factory in Chanthaburi so you can see the process yourself: https://www.yearofthedurian.com/2012/05/sunshine-durian-factory.html

    1. Bliss you Lindsay,
Good tip although Ill admit i am not too worries about that considering virtually all produce is also washed in chlorinated water. Not ideal but id rather have a perfectly ripe durian that was washed rather thana under ripe one. Having both best! 🙂
